Trick Review
Tricks are just as important as letters and sounds when it comes to reading and writing! Make sure your child knows all of them! Unfortunately, no matter how well your child seems to know the "tricks," if he or she has memory issues, he or she might start forgetting them again. As a result, it's important to review them as often as possible, especially if you find your child forgets things easily. Don't forget to make sure your child is using them to sound out words when reading and writing as well! Once you get familiar with the tricks, you'll see that they pop up in all sorts of words! Happy learning!
Directions: To review the tricks, have your child say the letters in the trick and what the letters in the trick say or do. Include the key word in your review as well. For instance, "S and the h say /sh/ as in /sh/ip!"... "C and the h say /ch/ as in /ch/ick!!"... "T and the h say /th/ as in /th/umb!"... "An e at the end of a word makes the closest vowel say its name as in c/a/ke!"... Go through all of the tricks in this manner, using the key word to help you know what each trick says. Say them excitedly with your child so it's not a boring exercise! You can even come up with hand motions or put them in song/rap form! Get creative and have fun! Childhood only comes once!
